You must have had calls regarding the new postage rates. I understand there will be a upcharge for # 10 envelopes thicker than 1/8" I have had two customers going to fold 8 1/2 x 11 sheets in half & insert into 6 x 9 to save on postage. Does USPS actually think they can process a thinner 6 x 9 better than a slightly thicker # 10 ??? We frequently place support calls for our software, primarily Adobe products but occasionally Microsoft and Intuit too. I'm always amazed how efficient the calls are handled, especially when they are routed to India. Our experience is that while there may be an occasional problem understanding accents, the technicians over there are MUCH MORE dedicated to finding a solution than our on-shore reps. The overseas technicians take our problems personally and simply won't give up until they've found a solution. The local reps are more likely to shift responsibility to someone/something else (must be something wrong with your computer, your operating system, your mother-in-law) rather than ferit out solutions. A recent example: We had a problem with color separations from certain PDF files printed to our AB Dick DPM2000 platemaker. They printed ok to our proofer. I called Adobe. The technician suggested several solutions during the 1/2 hour we were connected. Finally he apologized and said he needed to do some research to find the solution and would be back within 24 hours. I then called our contact at Itek, the manufacturer of the platemaker (using AB Dick and Itek shows how old our system is!) The person who did the original programming for the Harlequin rip in our platemaker took the call. His immediate solution: "Your platemaker is out of date with today's new software (higher versions of PDF). You can distill your files using PDF version 3.0 or less or purchase a new platemaker. We no longer support your machine. Thanks for your call." In less than 24 hours the Adobe technician called back and described a software switch buried many layers deep in the acrobat print menu. Sure enough it solved the problem. Our best responses seem to be with technicians for Adobe products and Microsoft Publisher. Our poorest experiences are with Xerox (forget to return calls, or transfer the responsibility to another department) The most frustrating part of any call, regardless of who we're dealing with, is getting past the gatekeepers. Understandably we are saddled with account numbers, passwords and hieroglyphics for security reasons, but it is an annoying experience each time we place a call. Because of security and crooks trying to get help for free, we're saddled with the system, but I wish there were a more efficient method. Ernest Bentley Old Town Printing 19 W. Actually, my biggest beef with off-short support is the difficulty I have making myself understood. I don't expect to have to explain to an Adobe support tech why I need the halftones to print on the black separation with the type. I certainly don't expect to have to explain what separations are. In general, I've found the off-short phone answerers and first-line support people to be grossly inadequate, and the second-line techs to be competent and helpful. I've also found it easier to get to a second-line tech on a domestic call than on an offshore call. Then again, my younger son tells me there's probably some poor schlub in India who's just as frustrated at having to deal with Dell support techs with Texas accents . As a former yankee, I can tell you everbody in the South has a very difficult time understanding me, even when I refrain from saying things like "wicked guahd". It's mutual. My job in college (Savannah) was at a blueprint shop. I created a very irate customer when I couldn't understand her. She kept asking for a "PAN" saying she bought one just last week. I was absolutely positive we did not sell "pans" and that we never had. Eventually I got the manager and he was able to assist her in buying a new "PEN". These days I've learned a lot, I can even say y'all convincingly. Anyway, I was going to suggest the "email" a question route. I've used it for tech help a couple times, and while the reply usually takes a day or two to come back, it's far less stressfull than sitting on hold, or trying to over pronunciate. Just make sure you send every possible detail they need to make suggestions, otherwise they'll write back suggesting you call. Hi Bruce, To answer your question, Yes and No. Static in copies has always been a problem and I have not heard of a sure fire solution. I'll give you a bunch of possible ideas I've heard over the years. Some fold right away from the copier to the folder with no problem, other have to wait a day. Some fold fine on a friction feed folder but will not separate on an air feed. Adding a static sheet like "bounce" sometimes works, sometimes not. Anti static tinsel same result, sometimes works, sometimes not. I've heard of some adding a ground wire to the feed table, guides, or any metal the paper comes in contact with while on the feed table also with mixed results. Sometimes humidity can play a role in the static and you can resolve the problem by replacing the humidity in the paper that the heat from the copier removed by using a humidifier in the bindery area and letting the paper adjust to the new climate, but that too is not a sure fire fix and you have to wait a day or two to fold. I have taken a small stack (100 copies or less) and removed static by picking up every sheet one at a time off the stack and re stacking it in a new pile one sheet at a time, but that would be time consuming for larger quantities. Other times turning the blowers up real high to force air between the sheets while turning down the suction to barely pull the top sheet works. Good luck, Hope this helps. -- Rick _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ Rick B. Foster JMJ Printing Co. The cause of your problem my be related to the copy device sucking the moisture directly from the sheet. We have had excellent success eliminating static-related issues by placing humidifiers throughout the shop during the winter months. If you purchase a couple of small humidifiers and place them near the air intake of the folder, your problem may be lessened. If, for a few hours, you place them in a small room together with the job, your problem may disappear. Best of luck. Lots and lots of static. I am copying on a Xerox 4110 copier. Folding on a Baumfolder 20 x 26 (old floor model). I purchased an Ionix Static Eliminator. This did not seem to help. Has anyone solved this one? Thanks for your help. I'm sure yo all had this discussion before so does anyone have any recommendations? The pressure for .39 color copies is increasing. How much extra do people charge as they move up the stock ladder? Even black & white copying seems to be changing. The big box stores don't seem to be giving it away anymore. Around here, Staples isn't dropping below .10 a copy until after 500, sometimes 1000 copies. Any help would be appreciated. Our lowest price for large quantities of color is 59 cents. The first copy we make is a $1.99. Then we combine the total output to a price on a sliding scale. This scale at 10 copies is $1.79 100 copies $1.69 Over 500 copies gets to the 59 cents. We are a small copy shop. Average monthly color copy volume is 20,000. I hate to think about the copy volume I would have to achieve to make the same profit at 39 cents. I have also calculated depreciation, labor and overhead costs at 30 cents a color copy. I hope this adds to the information mix. Bill Howard Triangle Reprocenter Princeton, NJ ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. If printers would be willing to share it would be very helpful to Doug and myself, and i imagine a lot of others as well. Here's another issue too. We charge a small fee for downloading and outputting a file. Whether you do or you don't, how do you handle it when customers have to send you files several times because of problems or last minute revisions on their end. You wind up downloading, opening and printing a file three or four times before your ready to go ahead with (hopefully) a larger run. thanks again, Michael Macrides Hercules Press Boston, MA > Send PrintShare mailing list submissions to > printshare@printweb.org > > To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit > http://rb.enter.net/mailman/listinfo/printshare > or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to > printshare-request@printweb.org > > You can reach the person managing the list at > printshare-owner@printweb.org > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of PrintShare digest..." > > > *** This is a PrintShare List Digest *** > > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. pricing color copier/printer output (Michael Macrides) > 2. Around 500 printers participated in the 2006-2007 NAQP/ PrintImage pricing study and their info has been compiled, graphed, sorted and presented in a number of interesting ways. It has pricing on different cpm equipment, pricing on different stocks, RIP charges etc. I don't think the response here could compare to the amount of info available in that report even though the emphasis is on offset. Of course the info shared here is free and as you suggest, you can get different opinions on specific policies that may not be in the report or anywhere else. It's all good. -- Bruce Moore PowerQuote Software Manassas, Virginia "PowerQuote Makes Accurate Printing Estimating a Breeze" http://www.macestimating.com Ph. 800-686-0067(US and Canada) or 703-361-0369(Intl) On May 25, 2007, at 9:37 AM, Michael Macrides wrote: > Thanks for your response Bruce but the NAQP Pricing info is very > superficial with regards to copier pricing.
