We looked at EVO thoroughly, so has John Henry so you can also ask
him what he thinks. I think it was way overpriced for what it offers.
We've been using a Navigator RIP for almost 10 years now so for us it
was an upgrade path as opposed to a new outright license. The GPS
workflow looked more solid than the Screen TruFlow plus I've seen
some griping about TruFlow on some of the prepress chat boards and I
also know someone locally who isn't really happy with it so thats why
we choose to go again with Xitron. And Harlequin easily handles XPS
which isn't big now, but has the potential to be..so we're ready for
that if it happens.
As far as the DOP plates..we tested them and my pressman likes them
and also I know a guy running a 5 color 29" Lithrone with a coater
that also likes them. They're a bit touchier to handle than
conventional plates, but once you screw up a few, you learn to be
more careful. They can also can be burned conventionally (you know,
like with film...seems so yesterday) so they make a good plate for
the transition..
The complaints you've probably heard are from the earlier versions of
these plates...which were dogs...but the technology is ready for
prime time which is why we're going forward with them (we always wait
for prime time)...
And, the biggee....no more processor. No more chemistry and suddenly
we turned a bright shade of green...
